Everyday Actions for School Leaders
Supporting staff does not always require big changes. In fact, small but consistent steps can make a real difference. For example, school leaders can:
- Protect PPA Time – Ensure teachers have uninterrupted planning, preparation, and assessment time. Avoid scheduling unnecessary meetings during this slot.
- Promote Open Communication – Check in with staff regularly, listen to their concerns, and act where possible.
- Balance Workload – Reduce unnecessary paperwork and be mindful of meeting times, especially after school.
- Celebrate Successes – Recognise staff achievements, however small, to boost morale and motivation.
- Encourage Calm Spaces – Provide a wellbeing or “calm corner” where staff can pause and reset, even for a few minutes.
Moreover, when school leaders prioritise wellbeing, they often see calmer classrooms, stronger teamwork, and better teacher retention.

Building a Whole-School Culture of Wellbeing
In conclusion, teacher wellbeing is everyone’s responsibility – but leaders set the tone. By protecting PPA cover, balancing workload, and encouraging everyday wellbeing strategies, heads and deputies can create a positive, supportive culture.
Alongside these internal practices, schools can also benefit from external support. That is where LSC comes in – with specialist cover teachers, wraparound childcare, and holiday clubs. Together, these services complement internal strategies to create healthier, happier school communities.
✨ On this World Mental Health Day, let’s encourage every school leader to make staff wellbeing a daily priority.
